What makes a 79 black convertible a triple black?  Is there a way to figure this out?  The 79 bug we purchased is black with black interior and black top.  The paint is original.

It sounds like You have a triple black...

I 'm Guessing , but - Black car -- black top -- black interior...

Can't get much blacker than that...

We never had Karmann Cabriolets in Australia...

and I've heard of a triple white...

but never thought of a black one...

actually, I've only ever seen two black beetles...

circa about 1963 -65....

so black is rare down here....

Congratulations...

Are there specific chassis numbers that make it a triple black?  Ours was produced in January 1980 and everything is original except the radio.

I think by complete dumb luck on our part and a lack of knowledge on the sellers part we just purchased one cheap.  It has some rust but runs great.  We purchased it from the second owner who had it since 1986.  We have all sorts of original documents including some documents from the first owner.

If we do have a triple black the garage restoration that was planned for this winter will be changed to a professional one.

As a sort of newbie(first car 20 years ago was a bug convertible) we would really like some advice.

A "Triple Black" is also known as an "Epilog" beetle. From what I have gathered, it has trim very similar to the Champagne edition. Also, one car was supplied to the dealers. If you indeed have a real Epilog, you are right, you did come across a good find.
