It takes gear oil. Jack the driver side up and take off the rear tire. You'll be able to see the transaxle in behind the engine. On the side there's a large 17mm Allen head plug. That's the add hole. Take it off and stick your finger in. If there's gear oil up to the bottom of that hole, you're good to go. If not you need to add some.

On the bottom of the trans is another big plug. This is your drain plug. You can drain it all out and add in fresh if you want. I think i got 3 quarts of 80w90 gear oil when I replaced my trans. I don't remember using all of it.

Then engine itself takes 2.5 quarts. If you have a deep sump or a filter it'll take more.

i was going to say that on some trannys that there is 2 drain plugs and on others there is only 1.

On the swing axle case there is two plugs to drain it.If it is upgraded to a IRS case (as they are basically the same) there is only one.

re: alarm. Absolutely.

Re: shifter. make sure it's tightened down and that nothing's coming off of it. Are you sure it's the shifter and not something else?

I also have a 74 Super, in mine I have the the Hurst shifter but still had the same trouble as you are talking about. I fixed it with a new shift coupler, the one under the rear seat bushings were shot. While it was out I replaced the rivets that hold the shift plates together at the bottom of the shaft with bolts. It all helped allot, no more noise and the range of the stick is back to where it should be, it was very sloppy before.
As far as the alarm, Yes. I used a Python 502 from Crutchfield as well as other sensors added to it, back up battery, and a second siren also with back up battery.
Any information on those parts are at my site, link in Signature.
Good luck with it and welcome to it!
