Is there a way to make a later model Super steering wheel fit a 1971 model through some adapter or adaptation? I understand the later Supers are the same as the early water-coolers.

I've never seen one to adapt the newer wheel to the older Beetle. If you want a different steering wheel pick up a nice leather wheel and adaptor at http://www2.cip1.com/?Click=30260

Hi Blur,

as Wayne has said, I don't think there are any adaptors...

You would need to use a steering wheel for that model...

with the correct size, & splines...

If You are going to use an aftermarket steering wheel, the Boss unit will also fit the Golf Rabbit & 1303S Beetle...

Maybe you could use a VW steering wheel Boss that fits your Beetle,

and attach it to whatever steering wheel You want to use...

This would be illegal in Australia , but many people modify steering wheel bosses etc...  so long as its not noticeable... and its safe...

it wouldn't be hard for someone to fabricate such an attachment..

I couldn't make one, but someone handy with welders etc could...

One of the locals here has a 1976 Non super beetle and He went to fit a wooden steering wheel with a normal VW boss, but the splines were different.  He then found a boss from a Golf fitted his beetle....

Your model beetle would have had the dished VW steering wheel [??] and you want to change to the flat collapsable plastic steering wheel like I used??   You can find this type of steering wheel to fit Your model beetle....

they must have been made with the two different sized splines....

these steering wheels were also used in type 3 Volkswagens with the early type splines.....

or Maybe You have a special VW steering wheel used in later special model beetles??

cheers

Hi,

I did see on a website somewhere recently, where they said, to make an adaptor to fit a late model steering wheel was to take the actual piece with splines out of the original VW wheel....

as they said, this will destroy Your steering wheel,

actually, You will destroy it by pulling the splined piece out of the wheel....

I'm not sure how you would do this, maybe an angle grinder??
