to start off i have an old for truck that i have been trying to sell on craigslist for the last month. i have had a few hits here and there . i got this email the other day asking me if i still had the truck and i replied , yes i do. i got another email today with the following.......
tell me what you think .

Cool. I would love to pay for this item asap. I can have a  check issued out to u. If this is cool with u get back to me with the name and address with phone number...name you want the check written out to. The check will be writte out in excess, the reason is because my shipper will handle the shipment for me, so when u have the check take it to ur bank and have it cashed, deduct your charges and u will help send the remainder to my shipping agent. Do u have more pics u can email me? Hope its in the very good condition as described in the AD

Thank you so Much

on another note i replied back saying....

1st off i'm glad your interested in my truck.
2nd. because of the problem with people scamming , i am forced to accept cash only.
3rd. i never said the truck is in very good condition, i said that the truck has the typical old ford truck rust areas and needed other work.

now i'm going to wait a day or two to see it they reply to me again .
if i don't hear anything they will get reported (i kept the email)
but i hope i'm wrong and they are willing to pay cash as-is when they come to picup the truck.

Yep...a big scam.  Don't fall for it.  There was a lot of these going around a few years back.

If they insist on sending the check
Get the name of a detective and street address of the Police department in your town and have the check sent there.

My brother who is a cop in the states said they did that once and of course it turned out the check was a very good forgery although they send it with a bogus return address and or they try to get you to give up your account so they can wire the money instead and then they clean you out.

The company I work for (Marine Corps) had used checks to pay for contracted services last year in Thailand and some how some one in Africa got an image of the check and forged them to the tune of $60k of course we have insurance to cover it and the bank was the one who spotted it and would not pay on the checks some of the forgers have figured out that the routing codes etc... on the bottom are written in magnetic ink and have started using that so even the scanners at the supermarkets etc.. will read the check.

I refuse to use anything but paypal or cashiers check for anything I sell on the net and I always wait for the check to clear first .

What I don't understand is why they would waste the time and money to send a boogus check.  And yes I had one of these scammers send me a check for a bus, and when it came for twice what I was asking I told the person I would have to wait till the check cleared before shipping knowing that it was boogus.

I handed the check to my banker to do what ever he saw fit.

I figure it must have cost even a few dollars for the check and postal, so why would someone even waste their money?

My Son received one of these emails for a Motor cycle He was trying to sell...
They had a customer who was willing to buy the bike at around 5 times its worth...

same thing - cheque total was going to be higher again for the freight etc...

anything left over He could have...
Naturally My Sons Eyes lit Up....

then sort of sad after I told Him it was a Scam...
much like the Nigerian email....

Why do they do it...?

Well, they probably send out hundreds of those emails...
even if 1-2 or 5 people take it on....
thats good money for nothing virtually...

I keep winning a lottery in the Netherlands which I've never ever bought a ticket...
all i have to do is send $50 [approx ] and provide My bank details for the money to be placed into....

I also still receive Nigerian emails every couple of months..
I also receive emails from people on ebay saying they have sent the money but haven't received the goods...
I just send the emails on to - spoof@ ebay...

as they say - if it sounds or looks like its too good to be true...  it usually is....
