Because I'm still new to VW restoration I am still discovering places to buy quality parts. Where do you guys go to get quality restoration and replacement parts? Favorite people to do business with?

We don't have much, besides an import parts shop (T. Hoff) and a barn-based mechanic outfit called Asheville VeeDub, in the way of local aircooled people to do business with in Burlington, North Carolina. I must rely on the internet.

Thanks

These guys are the best.  They're here in Tucson, Arizona but ship all over the globe.  Joe Chirco bought up a couple of VW wrecking yards from out of state and had a couple of semis deliver tons and tons of cars, buses etc.  They have a shop that  refurbishses the parts.  They can get new parts too.  I swear by these guys.  http://chirco.com/

I started out in the same boat as you.  I soon found that driving hours to pick up parts and spending serious $ to get them delivered was putting a hole in my restoration budget.  I then heard about CIP1 and their delivery policy of free shipment for orders over $ 50.00 as long as the item being shipped isn't of great weight or volume.  They have been very fair with returns and provide tech advice over the phone.  The only regret I have with them is that they discontinued a very valuable paper catalogue (over 300 pages ) in deference to the new electronic communications world.  I have purchased hundreds of dollars worth of parts from them and would recommend them to anyone.  For heavy or used parts, I shop closer to home.  Get to know the guys in local clubs.  Go to VW shows and cruises.  At least with our cars the parts are out there in huge quantities at reasonable prices.  At a general car show, I talked with a guy who had $ 2000 in a Cadillac bumper.  I told him that I can buy brand new triple chromed for under a hundred bucks.  Might have even made a convert there!   Dan (MY72BUG) in Goderich

Dan, you hit the issue there. I've had so many bad experiences already with spending too much on parts (AND GAS) locally, and I'm weary of JCWhitney (screwed me with some cheapo pieces of plastic junk). I try to order my parts in waves so that I can get those free shipping offers, you know, and if you have a website that serves as a locator for VW groups then please tell me.

I've posted on craigslist to no avail.

Thanks guys for the prompt responses.

I don't know if this is what you were looking for for VW clubs but if you go to Collector Car Trader.com and navigate around the site ( great place to shop around the continent for cars) there is a link there to clubs.  You can search by car makes and when you plug in VW there are about 8 or 9 around the US .  Check out the web site for South Florida, it is a hoot.  MY72BUG

This is Mario Gavazzi AKA Kafertoys of Vintage Werks Restoration. Do business with him or his wife Sherry at your own risk. Do a Google search on "Mario Gavazzi", and that should be enough.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the saga of the thief, Mario
Gavazzi doing business as "Vintage Works" amd using the name
"Kafertoys" on the web - here is a short rundown:

The Samba feedback for Mario (15 pages after being culled through many
times - all negaative): http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=96792

A site that had to be created especially to warn folks away from Mario
with documented proof of one of Mario's earlier thefts:
http://www.mariogavazzivintagewerks.com/

Local news video coverage of one of Mario and Sherry's latest thefts:

Mario is now permanently flagged as a thief on Richard Atwell's site
(a highly respected venue - look for "Caveat Emptor"): http://www.ratwell.com/

The documented saga of Joan's bug, one of Mario and Sherry's more
blatant crimes: http://metwiz.com/joansbug.htm

A recap on the SEWR (an offshoot of the old TS Rants - not
affiliated): http://www.thesambachops.com/SeaElephant/viewtopic.php?t=937
We know of literally dozens of people who have been shafted by Mario
and Sherry. This is very well documented. It was proven beyond any
doubt.

I'm good, actually. I've talked with more than enough people locally and nationally to make my own decision.a
