I recently bought a set of mahle 4-lug 15x5.5 magnessium wheels with 195/60r15 tires that came off a 76 porsche 914 2.0 for my 73 1303 super beetle. so obviously I have the problem with them rubbing the struts. well now i need a solution. all wheel spacers i've tried don't work. i know disc brake conversions could work but there a little pricey.i've also heard some narrower lowering stuts can work. and some say lowered spindles might work too. but what i'm looking for an effective but cheap solution. i could keep trying to find wheel spacers that work but i've heard that they don't exist and its just easier to get them made at a machine shop. i'm also wondering if 914 caliper brackets will fit on a stock sb spindle. the 914's disc had real wide built in spacers on the rotors and i've been thinking of doing a 914 conversion if possible.

So can someone please tell me what my best bet is for sticking wide wheels and tires on the front. if i have to convert to disc then i'll try and scrape the money together and do it. but any help would be GREATLY appreciated

I am not familiar with those wheels. I do know though, that I was looking at 17 inch wheels and trying to get the widest wheel I could get. It seemed no matter how far into my search I got, I always ended up at either Top Line parts or http://www.germanlook.com.

They do not make drop spindles for a super beetle so that is not a option. I have a 73 super bettle with empi adj. lowering struts I have 15 x7 " rims all the way around they do not rub. check out http://www.cip1.com thats where i got mine. In my opion unless your pushing 150 bhp u do not need disc brakes. These struts may work for you too they are the cheapest I could find for the struts, inserts and springs your looking at app. $300. It may not work for you either its going to depend on the back spacing on your rims witch I am not familiar with. Check out http://www.germanlook.com   there is alot of info there . GOOD LUCK...
