I have a 1972 Super Beetle with stock 1600DP engine in it.  I have a new German belt on the pulley system.  I drove it about 7-800 miles and then it started loosening up, is there a problem, or is this normal?  If i tighten it back up, should i Be good to go

Cory, I don't know if it's normal but after putting a new belt on my 74 Super i noticed after a couple thousand miles it started doing the same thing. I took out a couple of shims and it was fine after that. I was wondering if maybe they don't stretch a little since they are new. It seems logical that they might a little bit. I'd tighten it and go from there.

What brand of belt?  If it's the Conti brand that most shops stock then it's garbage.  The best off the shelf belt I've found is the Gates brand, which happens to be Napas house brand of belts.  --Ryan

The standard automotive  belts sold by Most companies do stretch.

VW Genuine or similar Alternator belts are made NOT to stretch..

Its the way the belts are made and materials..

The ones I have are CONTI made in germany 11.3 x 912 mm..

VWC 111 903 137 E...

See that's just it, the Conti brand is the only one I consistantly hear complaints about.  Last few times I tried them they would not stop stretching.  Tension would need be reset on a weekly basis untill it was beyond the range of adjustment available.  Then I switched to Gates belts at the recommendation of of the some people.  It stretched about 1 shims worth the first week, then stayed put.  I've been using the exact same belt now for about 1 1/2 years.  --Ryan

these are superior made vee belts that do NOT stretch.....

the conti belts will stretch... I bought them from the US thinking they would be the same as the ones I bought here in Australia [optibelt]
