I have a 1972 super and I have a wiring problem, what is the relay in the back under the seat do.  And what color wires go to it?  Any response would be great.

Thanks, Marck

I believe you are talking about your voltage regulator. The schematic I have says there are 6 wires on a 72. A brown from the generator, green also from the gen., red/wht or red/blk to the generator as well. The other 2 wires are blue and a red to the ignition switch. There will also be a red or red/wht headed to the battery. My schematic is somewhat old and sketchy looking but that's what it looks like is says to me. Anyone with an updated schematic that could chime in?

I can add that the voltage regulator controls the rate of recharge being sent to the battery by the generator.  Not enough and your battery dies; too much and your battery cooks dry.  There is also a circuit which sends more power to the headlights when you turn them on such that they remain bright and don't brighten and darken with the changes in the RPM of the engine.  Now, just how it does this is beyond my knowledge.

Can you post a picture of it?

If you can't post a picture check the relay where the prongs come out as there should be numbers or letters on it. If it's the defogger relay it will have an 87  86  85  30  one number per prong. The voltage regulator has B+  D+  DF  and 61 If it is VW it will have numbers as this tells you which prong would take which colored wire.

Just in case someone comes across this at a later date. I believe the relay in question, defrost, would be the one pictured below. Please correct me if wrong.
